Chopwell is a former coal mining village situated in the picturesque Derwent Valley in North East England. Once the centre of global industry, the region is now popular with tourists for the stunning landscapes of the nearby North Pennines and Northumberland National Park, the famous city architecture of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, icons such as Hadrian’s Wall and the Angel of the North, and its rugged North Sea coastline. Home to Olympic BMX freestyle silver medallist Kieran Reilly and two-time downhill MTB World Champion Danny Hart, the North East is a place of contrasts and its people are known for their warmth and friendliness. Chopwell itself has a strong community spirit and a rich local history, with 2025 being the 100th anniversary of some important moments in the village’s past.
